Webmistress
My name is Ellen, also known as “Silversun” online. I am 18 years old and attending college. I’ve had a love of Jpop for about 4 years now, and my tastes are constantly changing. I am not Asian, so you can imagine I’m quite the odd-ball in real life! Other hobbies include web/graphic design and art. I also love to read.
Reviews
Ever since I’ve had my mp3 rotation site Koshka Brodit, I’ve been reviewing music. After inspiration from other Jpop review sites, I decided to open my own review blog to critique more in depth.
My goal in reviewing on this site has been to CRITIQUE and ANALYZE, and not to grade based on my personal opinions. Of course, my opinions do get in there somehow. For example, there are people who love Hamasaki Ayumi’s “Mirrorcle World”, but I find the disorganization in the song unbearable. Likewise, I’m able to overlook disorganization when I personally like the song.
I have also tried to create a rubric that works. I start my grading at 10/10 and mark down further for faults. Instead of handing out random numbers like 4 or 7 or 9 without really explaining the significance of these grades, I use a letter system like those used in school. In fact, I’ve seen BoA’s Jewel Song — which is quite well done — being marked as a 4 before. Grades like that are meaningless to me. As I said above: I do not like my personal opinions getting in the way. 100% is given to a song well done, and plenty of songs earn this grade. 85% is an average song, like most B-sides. When you listen to the song, you can decide for yourself whether it satisfies your tastes.
